Teens and college students are living with record levels of anxiety and stress. Many rely upon unhealthy coping mechanisms which leave a negative social, emotional, physical impacts on self, family and community. Art-making in a therapeutic environment not only reduces stress, depression and anxiety in teens and young adults, but it is rooted in spiritual expression and analysis. When a symbol arises in the therapeutic process, which exhibits a dysfunction, it also provides a valuable path forward in which to heal. The psychotherapeutic benefits of art therapy in conjunction with meaning-making and spirituality affirm “personhood and identity, and an increased sense of personal validation and worth” (Bell, 2011).
